Empower Yourself! Yes, You Can Do This!
Empower.

I love this word.

My personal passion is to help others empower themselves.

So let's get started!

How does one empower themselves?

Repeat after me..... I can, I can think and feel in a positive and rational manner, I can take care of myself and my problems, and I AM ENOUGH!

Replace self- doubt with  "I can"!

Repeat positive affirmations.

Take a walk outside daily.

Resist the habit of comparing yourself to others.

Identify your strengths and build on them, embrace and appreciate them- and use them!

Allow yourself to feel what you are feeling whether it be sadness, anger, grief, etc. but then get help to learn how to move past these feelings as to not let them have a stronghold.

Eat healthy.

Eliminate negative beliefs and actions.

Seek a positive support system.

Take responsibility for your life.

Know yourself and who you are and what you want out of life.

Keep learning!

Be kind.

Carry yourself with pride!

Make connections with people!

Help and encourage others!

You are in charge of yourself and your choices and recovery in your life.

Do Something- take action in your life!

Choose to Empower Yourself THEN Choose to Demonstrate Self-Care!

There are essentially four levels of empowerment.....
· Physical Empowerment · Emotional Empowerment · Mental Empowerment · Spiritual Empowerment

Self-Defeating Thoughts And Behaviors- They Have Negative Consequences
When you chose to demonstrate a thought or a behavior that is self-defeating then you are also choosing to have the consequences that go with them. These will be negative.

Happy Fall! A Great Time For Change!

Happy Fall Ya'll!

I love fall. It is my favorite season. The weather begins to cool off and the breezes are refreshing.

A new season is a good time to make some positive and healthy changes in your life!

I have been eliminating more unhealthy foods from my diet such as all processed foods and wheat, dairy, and sugar. I have also been getting outside more to get vitamin D and brisk walking for a healthier heart.

I am also creating a vision board with goals and dreams that I would like to pursue.

What can you change this new season for your mental and/ or physical health?

What is the first step that you can take for each goal?

Happy Fall and Happy Healing!

Hope is.......
During my last support group this week, each of the group members defined what hope looked like to them.

For many, it was just to be able to be themselves in life...to be true to who they really are.

Another person defined hope as being able to make it through the day without depression and anxiety.

My definition was to have some sort of relief in life with something that you are going through that is difficult.

I would love to hear your definition of hope as well as to hear what feeling hopeless feels like to you.

Comment in the comment section below this post or email me at Diane@LivingWithHopeCounseling.com to share what having hope means to you and/ or share what it feels like for you to feel hopeless.

There is always hope!

Live Big and Keep it Simple

Live Big and Keep it simple.

These are the words that my Aunt Judy wrote to me in a book that she gave me right before she passed away. This picture was last year and my last visit to see her in Arkansas.

Judy lived on a mountain in Mountain View, Arkansas in a cabin- and for many years, without running water or electricity.

She baked her own bread and grew her own vegetables.

She played the dulcimer, made dulcimers, taught the dulcimer, wrote music lesson  books, and wrote many beautiful folk songs.

She taught me to have a love for music. Several summers as I was growing up, my mother would drive my brothers and I from our home in Northern Indiana to Arkansas to visit my Aunt Judy..... and we would listen to her play her dulcimer and guitar and sing.

She lived a simple life.

She lived life HER WAY and she was her authentic self. She was REAL.

She was a hippie and a hillbilly and proud of it.

She was the most down to earth person that I have ever known in my life.

She had a HUGE heart and touched everyone's heart who met her.

She lived BIG and she kept things simple. No drama and no concern for what others thought. She lived her own way and she lived a full life of JOY and PEACE.

                        Baking Bread

This was during a photo shoot for National Geographic in the 70's.

In loving memory of Judy K.

When You Think Your Life Does Not Matter Anymore- Hold On, It Does!
Have you ever felt so down in the dumps that you thought that your life didn't matter anymore?

Have you ever felt like it just does not matter if you even try anymore because your life is just too hard right now?

Do you feel like you are buried in your own head with negative thoughts surrounding you so much that you feel like you could suffocate or drown from them?

If you are feeling this way or have in the past, there is help and hope.

First of all, take a slow deep breath.
Do what you can with where you are with what you have and- let the rest go for now.

Let go of what is out of your control.

If you are feeling inadequate, depressed, hopeless, or if you have no self-confidence.... HOLD ON!

You CAN change these thoughts and feelings.

After you let go of what you cannot control, seek help to learn how you can work on what you do have control of.

Join a support group. Seek counseling.

Change requires action.

If you want to see a change in your live, you need to make a change.

ACT.

Make the first step to get some help.

There are people who have a huge heart to help others who are going through a difficult time like you may be.

They may have gone through a difficult time themselves and came through and they can help to encourage you.

Seek help. Make the first move and take action.

You are valuable and your life is worthy of getting help!

I have personally been homeless, abused, suffered from Depression, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I overcame it all and you can too! - Diane

How To Help Someone Who Is Stressed and Depressed

The best thing that you can do for someone who is stressed and/ or depressed is to be a safe place for them to fall.

Venture inside of the person's world with showing empathy and respect to them.

Look below the surface of the person that you are trying to help.

Understand that hurting people push and pull people away from them.

Meet them where they are but also do not be afraid to show them you care and ask them questions.

Become aware of signs and symptoms of the person that you are trying to help.

Are they acting different? Do they seem hopeless? Do they demonstrate different patterns of behaviors and moods?

Let them know that you are there for them on a continuous basis.

Build and maintain a relationship that shows that you are connected to the person that you are trying to help so they will feel like they can come to you.

Give them HOPE.

Point out to them and tell them the things that are right in their lives and their strengths.

Be a good listener and reflect back that you heard what they told you.

Tell the person that you are trying to help that emotional pain is temporary, a season, and that they will get past it.

Invite them to go for regular walks with you outside!

Encourage! Love! Listen! Repeat!

How To Feel Safe in a Scary World
I was raised out in the country on ten acres.

I used to ride my bike ALONE down roads for miles.

I would bike to a creek and stand and throw a leaf to then watch it float to the other side.

I felt free.

It was me and the country roads.

Some were paved and some were dirt roads.

There were some houses but it was all beautiful country.

I was not scared in my yard flipping /doing gymnastics or when I would ride alone down the street on my bike.

It was so freeing. I felt safe and free and so very calm. I did NOT have a cell phone or any other way to reach my parents if I needed help.

It was a slice of heaven to feel that way.....able to explore alone and not be afraid.

------------------

Now a days, it is difficult to feel safe and free when there is so much crime.

It is best to always use common sense first of all. Do you be in parking lots alone late or after dark- period.

Do not put yourself alone with someone that you do not know well and who you do not know well enough to trust yet.

Use the brain that God gave you to keep yourself safe. I have people tell me that God will protect them. Yes, God protects but we also need to use common sense and make smart choices for our safety.

After always using common sense then- we can also place our trust in God to keep us safe. We just need to do our part as well.

Do not dwell on being scared but imagine a safe and peaceful place in your mind when you feel scared. Take deep breaths and demonstrate positive self-talk. Tell yourself that you are okay.

Read scripture and positive quotes. Listen to positive and up-lifting music.

Feeling safe is a state of mind but you also always need to make wise choices to keep yourself and loved ones safe.

If you feel like you need help with feeling safe. Seek counseling. Changing thought processes can help.

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
